ABSTRACT
Asphyxia occurs when oxygenated blood cannot reach the brain. A variety of mechanisms can cause asphyxiation. Oxygenated blood cannot reach the lungs if the air passage is blocked through choking or su ocation. Preventing the chest from expanding to bring in oxygen is considered mechanical asphyxia. The obstruction of blood and air flow occurs in ligature strangulations and hangings.
