ABSTRACT

The stressors discussed in this chapter are soil environment stressors. The two basic questions of interest are “What constitutes soil environment stressors, or where do stressors come from?” and “What are their impacts on shortand long-term soil properties and behaviour?” These questions provide the basis for the discussions provided in the various sections of this chapter. The central issue in seeking answers to the two basic questions revolves around the problem of determining a soil parameter that can describe the quality of a soil. The parameter chosen for such a task-to provide a qualitative and/or quantitative index of soil quality-is the soil functionality index (SFI).
