ABSTRACT

A few studies indicate that the majority of registered sex o€enders are likely to head back to prison-more so than any other type of o€ender-and the only way to stop sexual predators is to keep them incarcerated. A simple question concerning a chronic problem regarding sex o€enders is how long they need to be incarcerated a¦er they have committed their crime and whether it is safe to release them. Many victims and their families are worried about convicted sexual o€enders who have exhibited deviant and unacceptable

behavior and who, a¦er incarceration, are returning to start a new life within the community. According to US Bureau of Justice statistics, the Department of Justice (2000) noted that since 1995 one in seven prison inmates in the United States is serving time for committing sexual o€enses.
