ABSTRACT

Conel William Long Alexander was educated at Queen’s College, Belfast, and at Birmingham University. He obtained the B.E. degree with honors in 1901 and the M.Sc. degree on post graduate research. He was then on the staff of the city engineer of Birmingham, and became an associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers ICE in 1904. Alexander was appointed professor of civil engineering at University College, Cork, in 1906 at the age of 27. There he also inaugurated a hydraulic laboratory in 1916. He was a Member of the governing body and acted as deputy president of that college. He was elected a Member of ICE in 1913. He passed away due to illness and overwork at an age of only 41.
