Introduction

What does workplace safety mean to you? In some instances, scholars have identi“ed workplace safety from a human perspective as the discipline of ensuring worker welfare in the workplace. Others have extended safety to include process safety incidents and management. In this book, the term workplace safety refers to both personnel and process safety management. Accordingly, workplace safety, when discussed in this book, deals with the protection of the health and welfare of all workers, the environment, company assets and facilities, and ultimately the company’s image and sustainability. Essentially, the long-term viability of the organization is at risk when health and safety are not well managed.
