ABSTRACT

Genes are heritable units controlling identišable traits in every organism. Living beings rely on genes coding for all proteins, following the central dogma of molecular biology to ensure specišc transcription from DNA to RNA and translation from RNA to protein1,2. In September 1966, Joshua Lederberg talked about the necessity of evolutionary theory to model a self-modifying system and the potential of genetic therapy to repair any ‘genetic-metabolic’ disease3. Nowadays, gene therapy is considered as a method to insert genetic material into an individual’s cells and tissues in order to replace a defective gene, or by introducing a new function into cells to attempt to treat more complex inherited or acquired genetic disorders such as cancer, immunodešciency syndrome, cystic šbrosis (CF) and haemophilia4-9. Gene therapy as a potential therapeutic tool requires effective gene delivery via ‘vectors’ such as viruses that are used as vessels to carry foreign genetic material into the target cells10,11.
