ABSTRACT

Many research groups are interested in the development of drug-loaded magnetic spheres in the nano-and micro-size range for non-invasive targeted drug delivery in humans. We combined experience in nanotechnology-based drug delivery and expertise in engineering to improve the treatment of a common disease affecting many individuals at any stage and with devastating consequencesacute strokes. Brain strokes or ischaemic brain injuries are caused by acute (or acute-on-chronic) obstruction of a brain artery and stand out as the third leading cause of death and disability in the industrialised world. In this chapter, we introduce the reader to a conceptual approach of applying modern nanotechnology to a clinically common disease and discuss the initial building blocks towards a novel drug delivery method for reopening acutely occluded brain arteries.
