ABSTRACT

What happens to bone and when does it happen? We typically think of adolescence as being synonymous with teenage and ascribe an age of 13 to 19 years for this time period. However, bones, especially those of girls, are operating on a different clock. During the adolescent growth spurt, over a period of about 5 to 6 years, the body will gain about two-thirds of all of its bone minerals. By the end of adolescence, an individual will have about 95% of their maximum bone mineral, with the potential for adding a small amount later on.
