ABSTRACT

Why does bone health in children matter, and what are the key players in bone health? We begin by asking these simple questions, “Why does bone health in children matter, and what are the key players in bone health?” After all, everyone knows that children drink a lot of soda (pop to those raised in the Midwest and Coke to those raised in Texas), and they may occasionally break a bone due to clumsiness or to making heroic efforts to climb where it is unsafe. In the daily battle of raising children, preventing a disease that usually appears 30 or more years after childhood hardly seems a high priority. Furthermore, it is common knowledge that milk is needed for bone health, so other than —lling up the fridge with milk that often is not fully consumed, why worry about this issue? Would it not be easier to give children a daily calcium and vitamin D pill and not worry about bone health at all?
