ABSTRACT

Some of the most notorious and, perhaps most dangerous, gangs in America are those that are found in prison. Prison gangs are widely known by corrections officials (and to a lesser degree the public) to be highly organized, violent, and in control of much of the daily life in many prisons. As we will discuss later in this chapter, in some cases, gangs in prison are simply gangs from the streets that are relocated when members are arrested, convicted, and sentenced to prison for their crimes. Other times, prison gangs are created and organized by inmates who are in prison, but who were not necessarily gang members on the outside.
