ABSTRACT

Sugar is added to fruit drinks, soft drinks, desserts, snacks, cereals, coffee, tea, and many other regional foods. The consumption of added sugar varies from person to person and region to region based on their dietary behavior. In some regions, the intake of added sugar becomes very high during festival seasons and special occasions. The food guide from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recommends consumption of added sugar in the range between 6% and 10% of total energy, and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends to limit added sugar intake to <10% of total energy (Kranz et al. 2005; Welsh et al. 1993; World Health Organization 2003). The American Heart Association recommends limiting the daily added sugar intake to 100 cal for women and 150 cal for men (Johnson and Yon 2010).
