ABSTRACT

This chapter explains some of the prework that needs to be done as part of a successful and complete long-term strategic planning process. In this chapter we will discuss visioning and scenario modeling. These tools are critical if your strategic perspective looks out 5 years, 10 years, 20 years, or more. It is not that valuable if your perspective is 3 years or less. Unfortunately, the authors have worked with organizations that have a short-term, limited time perspective and don’t care what happens beyond 3 years. And in these cases, visioning and scenario planning do not serve a valuable purpose. For this chapter we will assume your organization has a 20+ year perspective and that you do care and want to exist 20 years from now.
