ABSTRACT

Rick wakes up, rolls over, and his wife says, “What’s that?” She is poking at a spot on his back.

“What? What’s what?” “What’s that spot? You’ve got a new spot on your back.” “Ah, criminy!” Rick’s in his 60s, and has had a history of

melanoma. Weird skin spots are a concern. In the old days, the routine would have been: Book an appointment with his primary care doctor in a week or so. Have the doctor give his opinion, and a referral to a melanoma specialist. Make that appointment, at least a couple of weeks out. Deal with the insurance billings for each, and the month or more of anxiety before hearing the specialist pronounce him safe.
