ABSTRACT

In all of the types of problems considered so far, we have assumed the deformation to be both progressive with increasing load and simple in form. For example, we assumed that a member in simple tension or compression becomes progressively longer or shorter, but remains straight. Similarly, in the case of torsion, we assumed that the angle of twist increases progressively with increasing torque, but that the shaft remains straight. In each of these examples, provided the material involved is linearly elastic, the deformation is directly proportional to the applied loading.
