ABSTRACT

According to the Centers for Disease Control, each year 1.7 million people receive a traumatic brain injury (TBI) severe enough to result in an emergency room visit. Of this number, 1.3 million will be treated and released, 275,000 will be hospitalized, and 52,000 will die. In the United States, it is estimated that 5 million Americans are living with a TBI-related disability, costing an estimated $60 billion a year (Faul et al., 2010).
