ABSTRACT
Thin films are now commonly used for applications as widely disparate as optical sensors to abrasive wear-resistant coatings. Aspects that are particularly important for the long-term reliability of all these films are the presence of residual stresses and the adhesion of such films onto the substrate. As a wear-resistant coating, an additional important parameter is the film's hardness or yield stress.
