ABSTRACT

We currently utilize a proprietary electroless deposition process to metallize roll film and synthetic fabrics [1]. The metal coatings are of the order of 125 /¿m thick. The DLC coatings are applied to plastic substrates, such as polycarbonate, that are typically 3.2 mm (1/8 in.) thick [2]. This paper addresses the need for a relatively rapid and simple test for adhesion that can be applied to both the development and the manufacturing of these products. The test must eventually be applicable to a wide variety of planar configurations, starting with simple geometrical shapes and extending to intricate printed patterns. After a careful examination of adhesion test methods, we decided to evaluate scratch indentation, and, in the case of the metallized materials, compare this method with a variation of the conventional peel test method used in the plating industry.
