ABSTRACT

Failure analysis for accurate corrections In order to make products highly reliable, three kinds of specialists must work together organically: the product developer, the reliability engineer, and the failure analyst. The task of the product developer, sometimes called the “know how” specialist, is to improve a product’s performance and decrease its cost. The reliability engineer is the failure mechanism specialist who identi‚es reliability issues lying dormant in the product. The job of the failure analyst, or the “know why” specialist, is to analyze in depth the failures identi‚ed, both inside and outside the company, and to clarify their causes. The ‚elds of these specialists are totally different. For a television set, for instance, the product developer is mainly an electronic engineer, the reliability engineer is usually a mechanical engineer with an understanding of failure mechanisms and parametric ALT, and the failure analyst is a materials engineer.
