ABSTRACT

When the potential for ¤owrate reduction via material reuse/recycle is exhausted, a common mean to further reduce the ¤owrates of fresh resource and waste discharge for resource conservation network (RCN) is through material regeneration. The regenerated source possesses better quality and hence may be further reused/recycled to the process sinks. In this chapter, an algebraic approach developed by Ng et al. (2007, 2008) is introduced to determine the ultimate —owrate targets for a material regeneration network, which include the minimum ¤owrates for regeneration, fresh resource, and waste discharge. The technique is based on the material cascade analysis (MCA) technique in Chapter 4, in which better insights are used to assist stream selection for regeneration.
