ABSTRACT

The ultimate objective of environmental investigations and remediations is to protect human health and the environment. Chapter 7 discusses generic remediation standards and human risk assessment methods designed to quantify remediation goals that will be protective of human health. In this chapter, we discuss the development of remediation goals designed to be protective of the environment. Before discussing ecological risk assessment, it is necessary to discuss the myriad of considerations in understanding the nonhuman environment, and the parameters and tools used in assessing its condition. The chapter concludes with various mitigation methods that are typically employed to restore damaged portions of the nonhuman environment.
