ABSTRACT
Environmental contamination is caused by chemicals that are in some way harmful to human health and the environment. Therefore, to understand how to identify, delineate, and remediate this contamination, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of the processes taking place in the environment. This chapter discusses the principal chemical substances of interest in hazardous waste investigations and remediations, and de„nes some of their physical properties in the environment.
