ABSTRACT

Rubber or more specifically elastomers are a unique class of materials having properties but they have commonality in the sense that they must contain a polymer to achieve high reversible elongations. Elastomers are the most widely used polymers and they often become associated with low-performance materials because of their low modulus and strength. Yet elastomers have high ultimate strength and elongation, and they are tough. Elastomers are used in many specialty applications and the aim of this chapter is to review the properties and function of elastomer nanocomposites in specialty applications. Sometimes common elastomers are used, though they may consist of special components to enhance performance. One such component, that has been traditionally used and is now recognized as an advanced material additive, is nanoparticulate fillers.
