ABSTRACT

Packaging helps to protect products against deteriorative effects, contain the product, communicate to the consumer, and provide consumers with ease of use and convenience (Yam et al., 2005). Shelf life is an important characteristic of all food products and related to its packaging; both product conditions and the package as well as gas mixture composition should be considered (Singh et al., 2011). The key to effective packaging is the selection of proper materials and designs that best respond to the needs of product’s characteristics, marketing considerations, environmental and waste management issues, and cost (Marsh and Bugusu, 2007).
