Mostofthecommercialpolyimide(PI)materialsrelyonsolvent-basedfabricationtechniques.However,partsformedfromdryPIresinhavebeenavailablefor nearlyaslongasPIfilmsandcoatings.Asanexample,DuPont'sVespel®parts, basedonvariousPis,suchaspyromelliticdianhydride-oxydianiline(PMDAODA),havebeencommerciallyavailablesince1967.Duetotheirexcellenttemperature(upto300-350°C),mechanical,solventandwearresistances,theseparts, inparticularbushings,clampsandsealrings,haveachievedwideacceptancein

suchdifferentapplicationsasjetengines,automobiletransmissions,compressor valves,gaschromatographs,plasmatorches,etc.
