Abstract-Rockburstisaseriousprobleminminingindustries.StilLitsoriginanddrivingforcesare poorelyunderstood.Withatimeseriestotalofmorethan700eventsin47yearsfromnorthern Russiaweareabletoundertakeafirstestimateofwhetherornottherearecorrelationswitha numberofvariables.Wenotetheabsenceoftheobviouscorrelationwithmonthlylunartidalforce andwiththemonthlyandyearlyrotationalchanges.Thereseems,however,tobeareasonable distinctivecon·elationamongrockbursteventsandthe11-year(Schvabe)and22-year(Hale)sunspot cycles.Apositivecorrelationisseenamongrockburstsandtheseasonaldistributionsofgeomagnetic disturbances.Theserelationsseemtobeunderstoodintermsofgeomagneticeffectsonbedrock magnetostrictionandbythatonlocalbedrocktensionandstability.
