ABSTRACT

Abstract-Trialkoxysilane coupling agents are used to enhance adhesion between inorganic and organic materials. In dental resin composite materials, silica and glass filler particles are coupled with vinyltriethoxysilane to the polymer matrix. Resin composite, ceramic, noble and base metal alloy appliances, amalgam and titanium surfaces are typically first silica-coated before silanization when they are cemented (or repaired) intra-orally or extra-orally. Then, a pre-activated 3methacryloyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane is applied onto the substrate, and a resin composite is photopolymerized on it. Silanes form a siloxane film that is known to be susceptible to humidity, saliva, crevicular fluids, bacteria, masticatory forces, etc. in the oral conditions. This review is based on a PubMed literature search, and it presents some selected research results on the current surface conditioning methods and their applications. Also, resin composite filler silanization research is reviewed. Practically all the research results presented in this review emphasize the silanization as a significant part of the adhesion promotion.
