ABSTRACT

Abstract-Orientational ordering of liquid crystalline molecules, 4-n-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB), deposited on polyimide and azobenzene Langmuir-Blodgett films was examined in terms of orientational ordering using order parameters Sn (n = 1, 2, 3, . . .), where S1 (or S3) was determined by optical second-harmonic generation measurements and S2 was determined by optical polarized absorption measurements. It was shown that the orientational ordering of 5CB molecules was dependent on the number of polyimide layers in the Langmuir-Blodgett films and was also dependent on the conformation of azobenzene monolayer.
