ABSTRACT

History and Introduction In the 1940s, the citizens of the United States were faced with a world at war as the United States fought the axis powers in both Europe and the Paci“c. To “ght these battles, a draft was placed into eŸect that required all males in a certain age range to combat our enemies. While these soldiers were overseas, women were asked to perform jobs that were previously performed by men. Traditional manufacturing jobs producing textiles, clothing, weapons, and ammunition were needed since a majority of the male workforce was “ghting on other continents. In response to this new population, the government enacted wage restrictions to ensure that one company could not oŸer higher wages to recruit female workers. Corporations responded to this governmental action by creating non-wage-related bene“ts such as health insurance. By oŸering this incentive, corporations could recruit and maintain the necessary workforce while male workers were not available. Hence, the need for job-related bene“ts began.
