ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present some thoughts on areas requiring further research to more fully realize the anticipated benets of the hydrogen economy. In this regard, Guy [1] notes that there are several issues concerning safe handling that must be successfully addressed before hydrogen usage gains wide public acceptance. These constraints have been described by Dahoe and Molkov [2] as involving both technical and nontechnical barriers. Nontechnical issues include the perception that hydrogen is a dangerous substance with a propensity for creating re and explosion hazards; technical issues relate to the requirement to ensure hydrogen technologies have the same level of safety as those based on fossil fuels [2].
