ABSTRACT

In February 2010, Russell Maroni was working as an X-ray technician at Akron Children’s Hospital when he traveled to volunteer for the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti. Russell and his clinical skills were pulled in to help at a field hospital, performing X-rays to help triage patients who might be sent to a U.S. Navy medical ship. Faced with the need to increase the number of X-rays, along with the quality of the films, given equipment and circumstances that were far from ideal, Russell drew upon the Kaizen training he had received back home, 1700 miles away, in Ohio. One of his workplace improvements was documented in Chapter 1 as Figure 1.10.
