11.1 INTRODUCTION
This chapter discusses the engineering practice in tropical residual soils in South-east Asia, drawing experiences from three Southeast Asian countries, namely Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore. Tropical residual soil and the factors affecting its formation in the local environment are first briefly reviewed with a discussion on the descriptive scheme used and delimitation considered as soil in engineering practice on the weathered profile. The distribution of tropical residual soils and their characteristics on different rocks follows, and then some of their physico-chemical properties are given. This is followed with a discussion on their engineering significance and how tropical residual soils affect slope stability, dam foundations, etc., drawing on local case histories as illustrations.
