ABSTRACT

This article is a review of high-pressure devices used in solid state research up to the Mbar-range. For obvious reasons this article cannot go in very much depth, and I have to refer to literature sources for more details. Being a contribution to a “School”, the article is rather intended to be an introduction for newcomers and focus onto the basic principles and terminology of highpressure devices. As such it might be useful as a primer to more exhaustive and specialized literature [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. The article is organized as following: The first part (sections 2-5) will cover various large-volume devices, starting with the most common high-pressure apparatus, the cylindrical pressure vessel, followed by a discussion of Belt-and Drickamer-type devices, Bridgmanand multianvil-cells. Section 6 is entirely devoted to the diamond anvil cell and section 7 will give an overview of pressure transmitting media.
