ABSTRACT

Naturalistic decision-making (NDM) research tries to explain how humans (individuals) make decisions in real-world settings and how this decision making is affected by various factors such as stress, complex information, and technical systems. Findings are usually based on performance meas urements. Recently, other paradigms such as distributed cognition, activity theory, and communication studies have entered the field of NDM. Such studies include a wider context, such as collaboration, organization, and ar tifacts. Little effort has been put into merging the results from these various fields. In this chapter, we propose a more holistic view on research con cerning the implementation of new technology in team decision making. We use our research on the new Swedish effort to create a joint mobile com mand and control concept (JMC2) as an example of how such a view can be applied and how methods have to be adapted to the more holistic ap proach. We also present results from a preliminary study to illuminate some methodological points.
