ABSTRACT

It is said that cultural information is a minimum prerequisite for human interaction-in the absence of such information, communication becomes a trial-and-error process (Knapp & Hall, 1992). We have seen movies where previously isolated cultures are encountered by Westerners for the first time. Typically, there is a lot of pointing and gesturing and much mis communication. Eventually some form of communication is established, but only after a somewhat lengthy interactive process. In modern times, many of us have been exposed to other cultures (at least through the mass me dia) and during interactions have some a priori information that shortens the amount of trial and error needed.
