ABSTRACT

As we have seen thus far, pollution of the ambient atmosphere is an enormous environmental concern. As a consequence, regulatory measures have been implemented to safeguard public health, protect air quality in pristine air regions, regulate or ban ozone (O3)-destroying chemicals, and reduce acidic deposition, and measures are being contemplated and debated to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases to mitigate anticipated adverse consequences of global warming. The primary focus of air pollution control activities on a day-to-day basis is to protect public health. In the past three plus decades, these health-based pollution control efforts have required an investment of several trillion dollars.
