ABSTRACT
The degree to which formal standards and procedures are applied to product development varies from company to company. In many cases, standards are dictated by customers or regulatory mandate. In other situations, standards are self-imposed. If formal standards do exist, assurance activity must be established to assure that they are being followed. An assessment of compliance to standards may be conducted as part of a formal technical review or by audit.
