ABSTRACT
In this chapter we introduce the so-called system border states and demonstrate that their probability is intimately related to the system reliability gradient function. This paves the way for calculating the reliability gradient via the probabilities of the border states. The corresponding MC algorithm will be described later, in Chapter 9.
