ABSTRACT

Civil infrastructure is the backbone of any society. When the economy of a country is strong, its investment in infrastructure projects goes up, and vice versa, because progress in a society is interlinked with infrastructure projects. It is normally considered that most developed countries spent more than 50% of their infrastructure budget on the restoration of structures which suffer from premature deterioration. This is for a number of reasons, the principal one of which is chloride-induced corrosion of steel in reinforced concrete structures. Thus, if more investment is to be made in new infrastructure projects, there is a need to reduce the money spent on repair and rehabilitation of existing structures because of chloride-induced corrosion of reinforcing steel.
