ABSTRACT
In this chapter the calculation of confidence intervals is demonstrated for the mean of a continuous variable-which is not contentious-and for a difference between the means of two independent variables-which is slightly more contentious. Whilst means summarising continuous distributions are not the main concern in this book, this is the fundamental case, and many of the issues relating to proportions parallel the development for means.
