ABSTRACT

The piles were 430 mm square and 18 m long. Several pile rigs were set up with diesel-driven hammers (see Figure 10.2). A pile was hoisted into position and then given a tap by the hammer to get the point of the pile through the top crust of the marshland. Then under its own weight the pile dropped 15 m through the mud. Each pile was then driven into the gravel until a speci‡ed set had been reached.
