ABSTRACT

A multi-storey building constructed according to a design-build contract included a deep transfer reinforced concrete truss. The client required a second opinion on the design of this from an independent consulting engineer. The report of this engineer condemned the design as unsafe. The contractor then employed another consulting engineer to carry out a further check and, if it con‡rmed the ‡ndings of the report, to ‡nd a solution that provided the least disruption to the existing works.
