ABSTRACT

State or local health departments Public health entomological assistance may be found at most state health departments, and in some cases, at local or city health departments. Most state health departments have a state medical entomologist or public health entomologist located in the epidemiology, communicable disease, or environmental health section(s) (see Chapter 3). Some local or city health departments have their own entomology programs. For example, New York City has a Zoonotic and Vector-borne Disease Unit (ZVDU) that conducts disease surveillance, investigations, and education, and provides consultations with human and animal healthcare providers with the goal of preventing and controlling human illness due to zoonotic and vector-borne diseases. A search of the Internet using the keywords “public health entomology,” “zoonotic disease,” or “vector-borne disease” should identify these state, local, or city programs in your area.
