Importance and physical description Mosquitoes are by far the most important bloodsucking arthropods worldwide, causing much annoyance and disease in humans, other mammals, and birds. About 3,500 species of mosquitoes have been described, but relatively few of them are significant vectors of human diseases; however, the mosquito-transmitted disease burden worldwide is quite severe.
