ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the significance of mobility and the critical stages in the mobility solution lifecycle. It discusses the application of enterprise mobility in different domains, giving a more complete picture of the significance of the mobility solution lifecycle. The chapter explores the significance of mobility from several angles such as user demand, business revenue context, productivity benefits, and innovation brought about from mobile applications. The stages of mobile solution development are similar to those of the information technology solution lifecycle. Mobile handsets were initially used only to make calls, and hence the start of the mobility trend can be attributed to the laptop era. Mobile handset scanner applications were used for warehousing and store inventory management and in mobile point-of-sale devices and consumer handsets for barcode search. The mobile industry is evolving so rapidly that the handsets that were used just a few years back are slated as legacy.
