ABSTRACT

Acts of intended violence end in the same result, but di–erent motives and purposes spawn that violence depending on the social setting in which the assault occurs. e similarity of the end results tends to overshadow the very real di–erences among the di–erent venues of violence. By venue, we mean the setting or target of the violence. Workplace violence di–ers from attacks on public šgures, which di–er from violence toward intimates, which di–ers again from violence targeting gathering places, which di–ers from violence against symbolic or representative targets. Understanding these di–erences-and recognizing them when they emerge from a subject’s behaviorgives the threat manager a much fuller understanding of the situation under assessment and the subject’s relationship with the potential targets. In other words, not all grievances evolve or develop in the same context and circumstances. e di–erences emerge from the social setting or venue in which the act of violence occurs.
