ABSTRACT
The earliest known gears and gear pairs were designed and manufactured many centuries ago.1 It is reasonable to assume that a friction disk was invented prior to a gear. Although gears and friction disks differ from each other, in a certain sense it is possible to recognize some similarities between these two different devices, rst of all from the standpoint of transmission of rotation between the two shafts.
