ABSTRACT
The normal, or Gaussian, distribution plays an important role in many areas of physics because many different variables have that distribution. We saw in §14.1.1 how to use Lagrange multipliers to show that the particle speeds in a gas are normally distributed. The central limit theorem says that, under rather general conditions, many other random processes are also normally distributed.
