ABSTRACT

Our previous analyses of the combined effects of occupational factors have been based on subjective reports. It is essential to determine whether a similar or different profile is observed when objective indicators of health and safety are considered. This was initially done by conducting a secondary analysis of the Bristol Stress and Health at Work database (Smith et al., 2000). In this study measures of accidents at work were recorded from the sample who repeated the questionnaire 12 months after the original one (N=1854). A small cohort study was also conducted (N=188) and this involved performance of laboratory tasks known to be sensitive to occupational factors (e.g. sustained attention tasks; the stroop colour-word task-a measure of resistance to distraction).
