It is temptingtospeculateonthereasonsforthesefindings.Forpeopletobeabletocomplete questionnaireitemsaboutcrgonom icexposuresandoutcomes,theymusteitherbesti l l suffering fromtheafter-effectsoftheexposureortheywil l havetorecal l theinformationfrommemory.In ordertorecalltheinformationfrommemory,itmusthavebeenstoredinmemoryinthefirst place.Ifstoredinmemory,itwi l l eitherhavebeenencodedactivelyorpassively(withorwithout attention).In thel attercase,recal l wil l beaprocessofinference,usingotherinformation.Or,as Sir Frederick Bartlett put it:
