ABSTRACT

Dormancy occurs in seeds and vegetative propagules of many –owering plants (Lang 1996). Biologically, dormancy serves as a mechanism for ensuring plant survival during adverse environmental conditions, such as high and low temperatures and drought. Horticulturally, the occurrence of dormancy restricts the –owering season. On the other hand, a dormant period is advantageous for commercial production of many crops since it allows the commercial handling, storage, and transportation of the dormant organs. Thus, the understanding and control of dormancy in plants is critical for effectively managing the crop production, shipping, and usage of crops.
